Shawn -

I was one of the very early users of LinkedIn. It's been very helpful to me for finding different upward paths to connect with people.

Dave - if you haven't already, you should check into Linked In.

Although it's another online social network, it was designed from the ground up to support networking for professionals and to leverage 6 degrees of separation. It won't do the work for you, but it's an invaluable tool if you used correctly.

James -

That's primarily why I haven't used them yet. I signed up for Facebook and MySpace, but MySpace was such a visual trainwreck I couldn't actually use it.

But, I know people who are successful marketing through it. When (if) they compel me that the ROI is worth it I'll schedule that coaching I talked about :-)

Facebook = timewaster.

At least, for me. I had to get off that before two weeks were up to save myself from the barrage of old high school contacts, stupid Funwall notices and all that kiddy crap.

Shaun -

I'm sure the 3 sites you've mentioned can add value, but I haven't personally used them yet. I've got a few contacts that are strong social networkers who will be coaching me when I schedule time in for it.

I appreciate your link, and I hope that you can leverage what I'm writing to help out photographers in your niche!

Taking a planned approach "x degrees of separation" approach. It gets you in under the 'salesman' armor that influential people tend to have.

why not add wink, facebook and myspace to the list?

I write a blog for new photographers at shaunkrisher.wordpress.com and you can bet I'll be adding you to my blogroll, and writing some posts on how your ideas pertain to photographers.

Thanks for the great work!

Right on ... I'd go further to say that those "A-listers" used these exact same techniques to get where they are today.

For anyone else reading, remember that these tips aren't just for contacting A-Listers; they're useful to help get in front of anyone, at any level.

I can certainly see why trying to network with that A-lister is an intimidating, monumental task for most of the population. "Why would he care about me? I'm no-one important," is the first thing people think. Wrong. Everyone offers something of value. What do you have to offer?

"He's too busy... He probably won't read my email." Possibly, but possibly not, too. You'd be surprised.

"He won't notice me." No? If you play your cards right, that A-lister sure as hell will put you on the radar.

"I can't send him an email/give him a call/drop him a line/mail him a note/etc etc." Why the hell not?

Like you said, Dave, network your way up to the top. Start with one person and get active. Get noticed. Keep pushing forward, like a snowplow in a Canadian winter storm.

And remember, A-listers are just regular people, too. They just have more money. :)
