@Shawn -
There's a limit to how well it can scale, but it's something you can balance by limiting the time commitment of your giving (choosing high-leverage activities).

Hi Dave,

I'm a new subscriber and am finding your blog valuable. I've had a long career as an executive speechwriter at a number of companies and through my own business, so I make sure I stay in touch with friends and clients I've made there through a monthly Enewsletter and frequent emails. (Most of them don't have time to read blogs.) It's not a big effort, because I like them! Now I'm trying to extend my network through social networking -- doing things like this.

I think the major component of the effort is to do just what you're advising --
and be genuinely interested in what the folks in your network are doing and how you can help them.

Jean Gogolin's last blog post..Stories - The Secret Sauce of Seducing the Crowd

[...] I’ve said it before - the number one way to connect with people is to get to know what they are passionate about and discover how you can add value to what they are doing. That’s it. You want to get on a Magnet’s radar? Find a way to make their life easier. Find a way to help them get what they want. Find a way to make them feel better, or more valued, or more confident.
Dave,

Great post - right now I would have to say my best networking strategy has been to find a relatively small group to meet wtih regularly in a networking club that have a similar target market (small business owners) and really add value to that small group.

Which leads to a question - I totally agree with the process outlined above, but how large can that process scale? In other words, is it practical to stay in touch, add value and be the go to guy on an active basis for more than 20 or so people?
